'I'll get by. I'll survive. When the world's crashing down. When I fall and hit the ground. I will turn myself around. Don't you try to stop me'
I think it is a song about telling yourself that no matter what happens or how many times life knocks you down that you are strong enough to get back up and keep fighting. That no one can stop you from doing what you want. The song expresses the fear that Alice faces in wonderland. She tries to get out of that place and she becomes involved in events that will change something in her. She hopes to survive and won’t cry or break down. In this case I feel it relates to the fear that Katniss faces in the Hunger Games. Her love for Prim is so strong that she is willing to sacrifice herself for her sister, something that not many others in the district would do for their family members. Through flashback, Katniss reveals how she grew up as a survivor after her father’s death and her mother’s descent into depression. This flashback illustrates Katniss’ strength and will to survive.
Never Knew I Needed
'For the way you changed my plans. For being the perfect distraction. For the way you took the idea that I have. Of everything that I wanted to have. And made me see there was something missing'
This song is pretty much about two people who feel like they know want they want and know want they need in life and realize through meeting each other that they know don’t want they need. That they have no idea and the realization becomes what they need is love. And they find that with each other. During the cave scene, Peeta and Katniss really kiss for the first time and Peeta tells Katniss the story of her singing on the first day of school. But it’s this kiss, the one where Katniss finally realizes how much she really needs Peeta. One interesting aspect of Peeta and Katniss’ relationship is the evolution. Katniss loves Peeta. Her love, however, develops slowly and painfully. The two start off as virtual strangers, then they enter into an uneasy friendship that finally progresses into love.
'How many times will let you me change my mind and turn around? I can’t decide if I’ll let you save my life or if I’ll drown’
Arms is about the fight between your heart and your mind. It is about the struggle and finally giving in when you’re wrapped in their arms. Then you get it; you feel loved and love wins. In this case Katniss’s mind speaks for Gale, but her heart is shouting for Peeta. The question is should she listen to her heart or just follow her mind. Katniss is in a battle with her emotions and the love she has for him. Slowly, Katniss is falling for Peeta. She feels a stirring inside her chest when they kiss, a kiss that leaves her curious and wanting more; in Peeta’s arms, she feels safe and secure; and then, during his descriptions of her as a child, she wonders if none of his feelings were made up at all, if, in fact, Peeta really does love her, which means that she will have to sort out her true emotions after all, something that Katniss has been avoiding throughout the entire novel. She can’t see a reason why Peeta would love her but she secretly hopes he sees through her walls and stupid behavior. She does not like to approach her feelings because she believes they make her look weak. She finds comforts in his arms, but doesn’t want to depend on him or anyone else in her life.
'When they gave us our trophies and we held them up for our town. The cynics were outraged. Screaming, “this is absurd” Cause for a moment a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world'
This song to me is about all your dreams coming true, and looking back and remembering how it felt and what the journey was to get there. When ” the crowds and stands went wild” is like when Pita and Katniss are first presented and are basically on fire and everyone loved them.
"It was the end of a decade but the start of an age" is like when they won, they began something that meant nothing would be the same again.
"We are the kings and the queens, you traded your baseball cap for a crown and they gave us our trophies and we held them up for our town" is them winning and being rewarded and their whole District being rewarded.
I Can’t Make You Love Me.
‘Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t. You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t. Here in the dark in these final hours, I will lay down my heart.’
To me, this is a song about unrequited love, but it also conveys very realistically the pain and hesitation in trying to move on from it. The song is about a boy and girl in a very caring relationship, but the girl/boy is hopelessly in love with him/her and she/him clearly knows he/her doesn’t love him/her. The gender of the character was never specified in the song, making listeners relate to the character more easily. I feel this relates to Peeta’s feelings towards Katniss.Peeta wants to be close to Katniss in whatever capacity she will accept him because he loves her but he know she doesn’t feel that way towards him.To Peeta, Katniss became everything. But to Katniss he was nothing but a mere aspect of her life she quickly wanted to obliterate. Peeta, although heartbroken, had to accept the fact she wanted nothing from him anymore. Throughout the novel he thought her love for him was real, but by the end he questions this love.
